When planning our trip to India, we had predicted that Udaipur would likely be our favourite city. For once we may have been proven right, as this magical city in Rajasthan charmed us.
The City of Lakes or the White City is all we knew the city for, but the reality goes beyond what we imagined. As you arrive, the first sight of the city greets you with its vast lakes in the centre of the rolling Aravalli hills. We ignorantly did not know this type of landscape existed in Rajasthan and were in absolute awe.
The city itself is quite relaxed for India and with dazzling sunsets every evening, we recommend taking a slower pace and really soaking up the romantic atmosphere. For this reason, we would have easily enjoyed another day or two here, however, we still found two days enough to see the main sights this city has to offer.
We stayed at Little Peepal House in the old city of Udaipur and found this to be the perfect base. The beds were so comfortable, the views from the rooftop were breathtaking and the homemade curries were truly delicious.
See what we got up to in this 2 day Udaipur itinerary below!

Udaipur Itinerary
Day 1
City Palace, Udaipur
Price: Rs 300 (£3.20pp) includes camera charge
Udaipur’s City Palace is one of the main tourist attractions, and for a good reason. Therefore, it belongs to be at the top of anyone’s Udaipur itinerary.
The palace is the largest in the state of Rajasthan and showcases the reign of the Mewar family in Udaipur. Wandering through the rooms of varying sizes and styles provides a glimpse into the history and the fashions of Udaipur.
Standout sections for us were Mor Chowk, Badi Mahal and the Mirror Room but the whole tour of the City Palace was incredible.
Neelam Restaurant
Price: Rs 150 (£1.65pp)
Enjoy a thali at Neelam Restaurant. The restaurant itself is situated on a rooftop and offers delicious, traditional dishes for bargain prices. This was one of our food highlights during our India trip as the thali was light and cooked fresh.
Neelam Restaurant also offers cooking classes for tourists looking to increase their culinary repertoire.
Gangaur Ghat
Price: Free
Gangaur Ghat, on the waterfront of Lake Pichola, provides an incredible view of the lake and lakeside Udaipur. The ghat is one of the most popular in Udaipur, used by locals to bathe and plays a vital role in local festivals.
Whilst we were relaxing at the ghats and taking in the view, a wedding photography session and a school assembly were taking place, demonstrating how important this place is to local life.
Sit amongst the couples and families on the steps of the ghat and enjoy a magnificent sunset.
Folklore Dance Show
Price: Rs 200 + Rs 100 for camera (£5.50pp)
Another must on any Udaipur itinerary!
Go and watch the folklore dance show at Bagore Ki Haveli. The show starts at 7 pm but tickets go on sale at 6:15 pm. The dances performed are traditional to the Rajasthan region and showcase the incredible talent and coordination of the dancers. Both male and female dancers perform as well as a puppeteer demonstrating his mastery of the craft.
The setting is within the Bagore Ki Haveli Museum, where the stage is set in an upstairs courtyard. The audience gathers on the floor around a big tree with the magnificent archways of the building ahead looking like something from a theatre set.
Day 2
Start your second day of this Udaipur itinerary by getting a view of the city. This could either be by getting the cable car up to Karni Mata Temple or by heading further out of the city to Monsoon Palace. We opted to get the cable car.
Karni Mata Temple
Price: Rs 214 for cable car return trip (£2.30)
Wake up early and head over to Karni Mata Temple. Here you can either get the cable car up to the temple or you could take the stairway up the hill. We chose to take the cable car and see the amazing views of the Mewar Boating Lake, City Palace and Lake Pichola on the short ride up.
Once at the top, explore the various viewpoints along the City Wall and observe the beautiful Udaipur city landscape below. Next, follow the arrows to Karni Mata Temple. This is a Hindu temple intricately carved out of marble. On occasion, you may even be able to witness the marble being hand-carved at the stairs leading up to the temple. Whilst the temple is small, it offers one of the city’s best views and is supposed to be another excellent sunset spot.
Walk the streets of Udaipur’s Old City
Price: Free
En route back from Karni Mata Temple, explore the streets of the Old City. Shops line the streets selling beautifully patterned clothes, vendors prepare tasty treats from carts and the tuk-tuks whizz by.
We were in Udaipur just before Diwali and the streets were lined with colourful tinsel and ribbons.
Jagdish Temple
Price: Free
The next stop is Jagdish Temple. Jagdish Temple is a large Hindu temple devoted to Lord Vishnu in the Old City, close to the City Palace. It was built in 1651 and is covered in impressive carvings. This majestic structure stands out in the Udaipur skyline and definitely deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Ambrai Ghat
Price: Rs 50 + 200 camera fee (£2.70pp)
Ambrai Ghat is on lakeside Udaipur which requires you to cross the Daiji Bridge from the Old City. The entrance to the ghat is down a narrow alleyway where you hand the security personnel your tickets to gain entry. Tickets are purchased in the square just before the ghat.
Here you have marvellous views of the City Palace, Taj Lake Palace Hotel and mountains beyond Lake Pichola. Ambrai Ghat also has a Hindu temple that’s well worth popping your head into.
Udaipur seems to be the city made for sunsets as Ambrai Ghat is another wonderful place to sit and watch the sunset.
Sun and Moon Restaurant
Price: around Rs 1000 for two mains and two drinks (£11)
Sun and Moon Restaurant in the old city of Udaipur is a rooftop restaurant that overlooks Lake Pichola. The menu contains a variety of western and traditional dishes as well as a bar serving alcohol (a rare find). The restaurant also offers a breakfast menu so it could also be enjoyed in the morning.
We couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy the sunset behind the mountains in the landscape than sipping on a cocktail and tucking into some tasty food.
Sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola
Price: RS 700pp for sunset boat (£7.60pp)
Now, this is something we didn’t get a chance to do but we have seen it highly recommended.
Whilst we were in Udaipur we saw spectacular sunset after spectacular sunset. Almost every restaurant, hilltop viewpoint and ghat offers incredible views of this stunning spectacle. However, the most romantic spot we can think of to enjoy the sunset is on a boat on Lake Pichola.
Glide through the peaceful waters of the lake as you watch the sky go from blue to orange and red, and see the hotels lining the lakeside switching on their golden lights. Perfect ending to your Udaipur itinerary.
